The groups it fails are the ones picturing it outside the rental house. If your weekend depends on the vehicle collecting people from an island address, you will be disappointed, and it is much cheaper to be disappointed now than at seven in the evening with hair and makeup finished.

Getting There: Four Reasons a Bus Stops Short

They stack, which is why this is a firmer no than almost anywhere else on the coast. Height first: live oaks arch across the lane and a bus roof lives well above the line a car passes under. Then wheelbase, on a road with cottages close on both sides. Then surface, because sand and shell shoulders do not hold weight. Then turnaround, of which there is none.

Any one of those you could plan around. All four at once is a road that is not for buses, and operators who have worked here say so before you ask. That candor beats a cheerful yes from somebody who has never crossed the causeway.

Stage on the Mainland, Then Go Somewhere

The Hammock Shops Village is the practical answer. It sits on Highway 17, it grew out of the old hammock trade into a long established shopping and dining village, and it has the kind of large lots a bus can enter, sit in and leave without a three point turn. Because there is food and shopping on site, the wait is not a wait.

Litchfield by the Sea is the other candidate, with a caveat. It is gated, access runs on guest passes arranged in advance, and clearing the gatehouse does not mean the interior roads suit a bus.
