It is the main reason this end of the coast books group travel at all. Family reunions take three or four houses. Small weddings put the couple in one villa and the guests in whatever is left.

For a chauffeur the gate is the whole story. Gated does not mean unwelcoming; it means the property decides who comes in, and that decision happens before your trip date. Some entries keep an arrival list, some issue guest passes through the rental agency, and some expect the guest inside to authorize the vehicle by phone. Three procedures, and a driver cannot guess which one applies.

The Hammock Shops Village Is the Easy Drop Point

The Hammock Shops Village sits on Highway 17 in Pawleys Island, a long established cluster of shops and restaurants that grew out of the hammock trade. It is the most useful group drop point in the area, for unglamorous reasons. No causeway to cross. Room for a vehicle to stage, because the place was built for visitor traffic. And once people are out of the car they can wander, split up and regroup without anybody moving a vehicle.

Use it as a mid afternoon anchor. A group coming off a morning round gets dropped here, given ninety minutes, and collected in the same spot before dinner. That beats three cars leapfrogging between parking lots, and the driving portion is short.

Rental Home Weddings Make a Shuttle Close to Mandatory

The appeal of marrying here is oceanfront and marsh front settings, plantation style grounds, garden ceremonies under old trees, and rental houses big enough to host the whole thing. The transportation consequences are consistent. Private drives are long. Driveways are sand or crushed shell as often as pavement. Live oak canopy hangs low, which limits vehicle height rather than length, and height is the measurement couples forget. Turnaround space at the end of the drive is often the binding constraint.

Then there is the guest problem. Nobody books a hotel block, because there is barely a hotel to block. Guests scatter across rental houses on both sides of the highway with no walkable option connecting them to a ceremony site. That is what makes a shuttle close to mandatory rather than a nice extra. This area suits executive groups in the tens, not the hundreds, and the reason is lodging. There is no convention hotel to absorb two hundred people, so an offsite here is assembled from villas and rental houses. That helps a board meeting or a partner retreat, because the group stays together instead of dispersing into a lobby. It is a poor fit for a sales kickoff.

The itineraries that work pair a half day of meetings with a round of golf and a dinner on the water. Transportation has to be organized centrally, since there is no shuttle infrastructure to fall back on and ride coverage thins out after dinner service. Airports are the other decision. Myrtle Beach International is the practical choice for nearly every group, and the MYR terminal and curbside notes are worth reading before you set arrival windows. Charleston International is a genuine alternative from this far south, which is not true for groups staying up the beach.

Golf Is Why Most Groups Need Two Vehicles

Three courses come up in almost every conversation about this area: Caledonia Golf and Fish Club, True Blue Golf Club and Pawleys Plantation. All three sit on the mainland side within short drives of the rentals, so the mileage is trivial and the logistics are not. Bags are the problem. Golf bags do not stack or compress, so a vehicle rated for eight passengers is not rated for eight passengers with eight bags.

Tee times are the other fixed point. A golf morning runs backward from the first tee, and groups underestimate check in and cart loading every time.
